If you look at the fact that many Europeans felt that there was nothing beyond Europe and that the world itself was flat, I would say that the discovery of a new world by Columbus had a huge impact on Europe at that time. As mentioned above it opened up the world of trade and also was the beginning of the Age of Exploration.
Less than a year after the publication of this comic, Columbus Day was renamed to Indigenous People's Day in Seattle. I love you, Seattle. This is why after all these years we're still best buds and I still drink your coffee and run on your mountains.
Christopher Columbus, son Ferdinand says of his father: He learned his letters at a tender age and studied... at the University of Pavia. The University of Pavia has no record that Christopher Columbus ever studied there. But it has been suggested that he may have attended a monestary school in a district of Genoa called Paverano, thus giving rise to the word Pavia. Fernando wrote in his biography of his father Columbus, that he was Genoese and his Genoese origin was also asserted by a family friend Bartolomé de Las Casas.
Schoolchildren are taught that Christopher Columbus wanted to find America, or in some cases that he wanted to prove that the world was round. But there are many stains on his legacy as well. Ironically, the Columbus-bashers blame him for some things that were not under his control and ignore some of his most glaring actual defects.
A down-on-his-luck American Indian recently released from jail is offered the chance to "star" as the victim of a snuff film, the resulting pay of which could greatly help his poverty stricken family.
I know that the discovery of the New World means a lot of different things to a lot of different cultures. I like the sound of Bartolomé Day. If you don't like that, call it Indigenous People's Day. Or perhaps Chris-Columbus-was-a-turd Day. I'd even settle for just calling it MONDAY.
But please, oh please
do not call it Columbus Day.
Criminal vandals destroyed a 775-year old monument to Christopher Columbus in Baltimore early Monday morning. It is the oldest still standing in the nation dedicated to the explorer.
